Eye Care

Diabetes causes eye disease by damaging the blood vessels of the retina, the thin tissue that lines the inside of the back of the eye. This causes swelling of the retina, and blood leakage from the tiny vessels in the eye. People can have type 2 diabetes for several years and not know it. For this reason, approximately one in three people with type 2 diabetes will, at diagnosis, already have some degree of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults aged 20-74 years. Surveys have shown blindness is the diabetes complication most feared by people affected by the condition.

One in three people diagnosed with diabetes show signs of retinopathy when their diabetes is first diagnosed. Ultimately, diabetic retinopathy will occur in the eyes of 78% of people with type 2 diabetes.

People with diabetes who keep their blood pressure and blood glucose (sugar) levels in good control may help prevent or delay the impact of diabetic retinopathy on their eyes. A 10 year study of more than 1,000 people with insulin dependent diabetes showed that those who tightly managed their blood glucose levels experienced 76 percent less eye damage.

Important eye care tips for people with diabetes.

- Your eye exam is covered by OHIP, but you may have to pay an extra charge for digital retinal photography.
- Maintain an optimal blood glucose level.
- Ask your eye care professional to send reports to your family physician.
- Have your eye exam done every year.  Keep your appointment even if you think your vision is okay. Finding problems early can prevent serious complications that could compromise your vision.
