Physical Activity
Working exercise into your daily routine can be one of the most important steps you can take to keep your health on the right track. In fact, physical inactivity has been estimated to be as dangerous to your health as smoking (Health Canada, 2002).
Regular exercise improves your body's sensitivity to insulin and helps manage your blood glucose level. Exercise will also help you to reduce stress, manage your weight, improve your flexibility and prevent serious health problems. Exercise is good for everyone, but especially for those with diabetes, who are at 2 to 4 times greater risk of heart disease than people who don't have diabetes.
Your goal should be to complete at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity aerobic exercise each week (eg. 30 minutes, 5 days a week). You may have to work up to this goal, but multiple, shorter exercise sessions of at least ten minutes each, are probably as useful as a single longer session of the same intensity. If you are able and when you are ready, try adding resistance exercises, like lifting weights, to your exercise repetoire.
A healthy diet, daily exercise and good communication with health professionals can help you to live longer and live stronger. Make good fitness and nutrition choices today and protect your health.
Exercise checklist:
__ Check with your family physician before starting an exercise program. Your doctor can help you decide what form of exercise is right for you, and if there are any restrictions in movement or intensity.
__ Monitor your blood glucose levels before, during and after exercise in order to track the effect of your efforts.
__ Wear your MedicAlert bracelet or necklace.
__ Make sure your shoes and socks are comfortable so that you don't cause any blisters.
__ Keep hydrated and keep some glucose tabs or sugar candy in your pocket in case glucose levels drop too low.
Physical Activity for Type 1 Diabetes:
All people with type 1 diabetes who are active should log their intensity and duration of activity, and make adjustments to insulin and/or carbohydrates.
Check T.H.I.S. before excercise, during excercise and after excercise.
Test- testing blood glucose levels
- delay exercise if blood glucose levels are under 5.0 mmol/L
- delay exercise if blood glucose levels are 14.0 mmol/L or higher and ketones are present
- test every 30 minutes during long periods of exercise
- test after exercise and include testing overnight if the exercise was of high intensity, a long duration or if exercise was unplanned
Hydrate- keep well hydrated
- drink enough fluids daily
- continue to maintain fluid intake, about 1 cup (250ml) for every 20-30 minutes of exercise
- replace fluids when you have finished exercising
Insulin- Adjust insulin and consider how the insulin is absorbed, and it's peak action
- remember that excercising muscles are more sensitive to insulin and there is an increase in the amount of glucose they use
- insulin may be adjusted for moderate to high intensity activity over 30 minutes
- additional adjustments to insulin may be needed during long duration activities based on blood glucose levels
Snack- add carbohydrates as snacks or fluids as needed
- always carry fast acting carbohydrate for treatment of hypoglycemia, such as glucose tabs, fruit juice or packaged sugar
- snack within 30 minutes after the activity
