Smoking Cessation
Smoking is especially harmful to people with diabetes: just like high blood glucose levels, the chemicals in cigarette smoke attack blood vessels, which accelerates the hardening of arteries and impairs the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to body tissues. The combination of high blood glucose levels and smoking dramatically increases damage to organs such as the heart, brain, eyes, kidneys and peripheral nerves, speeding up the long-term complications of diabetes. If a person with diabetes smokes, they have a three times greater risk for heart attack of a person with diabetes who does not smoke.
Quitting smoking is one of the most important things individuals living with diabetes can do to help prevent or delay the onset of complications.
There are many services in Sault Ste. Marie that are available to help individuals quit smoking. It is recommended that you ask your health care provider about quitting and which nicotine replacement therapy that is right for you. Remember that quitting smoking may result in weight gain, which may affect your diabetes management.
