Health promotion has been an important part of the Group Health Centre's mandate for decades.
The World Health Organization developed the historic Ottawa Charter over two decades ago that defines health promotion as: the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, an individual or group must be able to identify and to realize aspirations to satisfy needs, and to change or cope with the environmnent. Health is therefore seen as a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources as well as physical capabilities. Therefore, health promotion is not just the responsiblity of the health sector, but goes beyond healthy lifestyles to well-being.

Special publications including Take Care, health information events and classes, this interactive web site with its on-line health tools and drug database are recent efforts of GHC Health Promotion.

In 2007, three Consumer Health Information Kiosks (CHIKs) were introduced in the main GHC location at 240 McNabb Street (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario). The computers and printers are provided to help our patients find credible and accurate health information on the Internet while they are in our building at their medical appointment. In addition to selected web sites, some GHC patient information handouts are also provided.
