New Location for GHC Community Program

GHC's Algoma Diabetes Education & Care Program is moving on December 19th.

In an effort to provide a more convenient and central location for patients, Group Health Centre's (GHC) Algoma Diabetes Education and Care (ADEC) program is moving from its current location, 625 Trunk Road to 83 Willow Avenue, effective Tuesday, December 19th, 2006.

ADEC's goal is to enhance the quality of the lives of people with diabetes and encourages them to gain knowledge and exercise control over their personal health environment.

Cynthia MacKay, registered dietitian and ADEC department head says, "Anyone who has been diagnosed with diabetes can access GHC's ADEC program. It is open to the community and district residents and is accessible by: referral of a primary health care provider, registered nurse, dietitian, other health care provider or by self-referral."

Services provided by ADEC include: individual and group sessions for those who are newly diagnosed (with diabetes) and what are known as 'refresher' appointments; emergency appointments; insulin starts; medical directives for insulin and oral medication adjustment (with signed medical directive); flexible insulin therapy (FIT) program, multiple daily injection (MDI); insulin pump program; adult diabetes program; individual stress management program with social workers for active clients; health promotion activities such as cholesterol label reading and stress management classes, paediatric program; impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes) program and a footcare program.

In addition to the new location, ADEC's new phone number is: 541-2670; fax number is: 942-9980 (same fax number).

The GHC-83 Willow Avenue facility is located adjacent to the Centre's 240 McNabb and 65 Willow Avenue locations. GHC's Patient Re-enrolment office is also located on the north side of the 83 Willow Avenue facility.

ADEC is a member of the Northern Diabetes Health Network. Visit: www.ghc.on.ca
