November 13th, 2009 ~ Early detection and treatment of osteoporosis reduces the incidence of fractures and can help maintain a lifetime of healthy bones.
Proceeds from the Group Health Centre Trust Fund's Tenth Annual Big Wish Lottery (Licence # 2263) are going towards the $100,000 price tag of a new state-of-the-art bone mineral densitometer unit, used to conduct the best available diagnostic test for diagnosing and managing osteoporosis.
GHC's Diagnostic Imaging (DI) department performs approximately 2,800 bone mineral density scans every year. According to Val Skalecki, DI Department Head, "A bone mineral density (BMD) scan is performed by a medical radiation technologist and interpreted by either a radiologist or internist."
Measuring BMD is the best way to evaluate your bone strength and predict fracture risk. Skalecki explains, "This new equipment will provide us with direct x-ray conversion which delivers a superb resolution and rapid imaging in seconds at a fraction of the dose. It has been shown to have up to 40 per cent better clinical precision. This allows clinicians to monitor therapy in the shortest interval possible. It also offers the option to securely access, store and view information electronically."
At a cost of $20 each, a Big Wish Lottery ticket provides buyers with a chance to win $90,000 in cash prizes.
Ella Jean Richter, GHC Trust Fund Executive Director says, "Twelve thousand tickets have been printed and are available at major outlets and various locations throughout Sault Ste. Marie and in the Algoma District, and can be ordered by credit card by calling 759-5530, weekdays."
Group Health Centre does not receive government capital funding for capital equipment purchases. Fundraising efforts, including the Big Wish Lottery make it possible to purchase much needed medical equipment. Draw date is January 23rd, 2010.
