Proceeds from the 2010 BIG WISH Lottery are going towards the $100,000 price tag of a new state-of-the-art bone mineral densitometer unit, used to conduct the best available diagnostic test for diagnosing and managing osteoporosis. Early detection and treatment of osteoporosis reduces the incidence of fractures and can help maintain a lifetime of healthy bones. The bone mineral density test evaluates your bone strength and predicts your risk of fractures.
Group Health Centre's Diagnostic Imaging department conducts approximately 2,800 bone mineral density scans every year.
According to Valerie Skalecki, GHC Diagnostic Imaging Department Head, "This new equipment will provide us with direct x-ray conversion which delivers a superb resolution and rapid imaging in seconds at a fraction of the dose. It has been shown to have up to 40 per cent better clinical precision. This allows clinicians to monitor therapy in the shortest interval possible. It also offers the option to securely access, store and view information electronically."
Group Health Centre does not receive government capital funding for capital equipment purchases. Fundraising efforts, including the Big Wish Lottery, make it possible to purchase much needed medical equipment.
The lucky winners were: $70,000 cash winner: Pat Allan
$10,000 cash winner: Marc Diotte
